I notice that on the busy 33 in Buffalo, there are more speed traps on weekend mornings and finally realized that it's easier to hit your car with the radar when there is little traffic. No relation to safety, just a portable tax. I'm not sure who coined the term, but I have referred to this odious practice as "portable tax collection" for many years. I complain about it in my new book and propose a solution. People are not ready for that solution just yet so in the meantime, I thought we could honor the best of the best of the portable tax collectors.
The Buffalo News did us a big favor by writing about a police officer who has proudly and calmly fleeced 450 citizens in North Buffalo in recent months. Officer Obed Casillas-- LibertyMovement.org's very first Portable Tax Collector of the Month award goes to you. Congratulations!
Naturally, he used the old Nazi excuse. He was just doing his job. Well, Officer, I am just doing mine!
Docile Americans, brainwashed in progressive government schools, think nothing of being stopped by the police while going about their business and harming no one. They probably heard the old canard, "driving is a privilege, not a right." I will not detail the fallacy of that lie here, except to say that it is utter nonsense. Of course, driving is a right since travel has been recognized as a natural and constitutional right for centuries and driving is how we travel in the West!
Let's look at a routine, revenue-collecting traffic stop from the point of view of the natural, common law and constitutional right to travel and we reach this startling conclusion. It takes a lot of chutzpah (I prefer a more off color term) for a cop to forcibly stop a person minding his own business and engage in what is essentially slow motion armed robbery of, in the Buffalo instance, $175 of hard-earned money.
Also, we need to include in the analysis the fact that traffic stops are, along with the war on drugs and the war on guns, the number one trigger for violence between the police and minorities. People sometimes die during routine traffic stops! Here is just one sad example. So, while it is good to use humor to combat tyranny, at the end of the day, this is a deadly serious issue.
Portable tax collection must be stopped!
Please feel free to nominate candidates for November's award.
