The future of the Liberty Movement is direct citizen action. For 40 years, the Movement has relied mainly on electoral politics to advance liberty. That approach has failed as we have far less liberty now than we had 40 years ago. There are many reasons why electoral politics has failed but they can all be summed up as follows: electoral politics is rigged so that those in power now continue to win.
In politics, we generally seek to persuade others to change their behavior. This is extremely difficult. Direct action is different. You simply change your own behavior, not anyone else's. As I explained in my book Direct Citizen Action, there are many kinds of direct action that can advance liberty.
1. Pull your kids out of government schools. By far the most important direct action you can take to advance liberty in America is to pull your kids out of the government schools. Government schools are the foundation of big government in America. All efforts to reform them have failed and will continue to fail since politics is rigged. Massive withdrawals from government schools are the only way to break the back of progressivism, the reigning ideology in America for 100 years and the arch-enemy of the Liberty Movement. Not only is this the best single tactic for the Liberty Movement but you get a huge bonus as well because government schools are bad for your kids. I made the case against them on factual grounds in my book Government Schools Are Bad for Your Kids. It's an easy read and priced to sell. I can't imagine anyone reading it and still sending their children to those awful places. So, Point 1--pull your kids out of government schools. If you have younger children, start planning to have them attend a private school or homeschool them as many families are now doing. If you do not have children of school age, do everything you can to help your grandchildren and nieces and nephews escape the clutches of those daytime propaganda prisons.
2. Urge others to pull their kids out of government schools. LMO has created a user-friendly flier (PDF) you can pass out at your leisure to friends, family and neighbors. Print it on both sides and it will be a one-page handout. Let us know what area you are covering so we won't duplicate your efforts. Thanks!
3. The vast majority of Americans were not taught real economics in government school. Government schools won't teach doctrine that suggests they be abolished. There are a plethora of well-written full-length books on economics by Bastiat, Rothbard, Hazlitt and others. What is sorely needed, however, is a short readable intro to free market economics that presents the essential principles and invites further reading. I have written just such a pamphlet. It was recently described by a blogger as "the briefest, simplest, most straightforward explication of free-market, laissez-faire, libertarian economics I know." Your non-impossible mission is an easy one. Print out 100 of these pamphlets and distribute to neighbors, friends, and relatives. Ask them to do the same if they like what read.
[Stay tuned for more forms of direct action in the coming days.]
